There are many ways that you can decrease the effects of time. Aging is a normal process but there are certainly many tools and resources that can be used to delay, reduce or soften wrinkles and fines lines without turning to facelift surgery or the use of Botox or other fillers. You can certainly use these surgical and non surgical procedures but fine lines, wrinkles and other effects of aging can be fought effectively without turning to the plastic surgeon’s scalpel or needle.
There are many creams, gels, peels, etc that contain ingredients that can reduce or soften wrinkles. You can buy anti-aging products that contain these ingredients anywhere. Some are also only available on prescription at a dermatologist’s office.

Anti-aging products containing retinoids are probably the best anti aging products. Retinoids can effectively fight wrinkles, acne, etc. Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives and help to increase collagen and hyaluronic acid production which can help to firm skin.
Retinoids contain exfoliant properties, antioxidants and anti-pigment properties which help to increase collagen and hyaluronic acid produced by the body.
At the very top of these vitamin A derivatives is Retin-A or tretinoin which are available on prescription. These were first developed to treat acne but were soon discovered to be able to smooth wrinkles and fine lines. Other retinoids include retinol and palmitate which you may be able to get over the counter.
Retin-A or tretinoin can be very irritating especially for sensitive skin so using it every other night or a few times a week is recommended. It is so irritating to the skin that it can only be applied 20 minutes after cleansing the skin.
Most if not all retinoids can only be applied at night as they are photosensitive. Exposure to UV rays renders them inactive. In addition, even when they are applied at night, sunscreen will still be needed to be applied the following day as they increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun.
Retin-A is the most irritating but thankfully, there are milder forms of retinoid products that are less irritating such as Renoca and even Retin-A Micro.
However, the most popular retinoids feature the ingredient retinol that is non prescription. Neutrogena as well as RoC produce some of the most popular anti wrinkle retinol products.
Results can usually be noticed within three to four weeks of using the best anti aging products that feature retinoids and even sooner for certain types of retinoids.
2. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
These include glycolic, lactic, citric and malic acids and are obtained from various plants in nature.
AHAs help to improve the skin’s texture and radiance by loosening the bonds between dead skin cells that are on the top layer of skin so that this dead skin can be shed quicker leaving softer and radiant skin behind.
Of these AHAs, glycolic acid is the most popular and is made from cane sugar. It is very popular because it is comprised of small molecules that penetrate the skin more effectively than some of the other acids making it one of the most effective anti-aging ingredients. When you buy anti-aging products, you may want to ensure that you include some that contain glycolic acid.
There are many cleansers, gels, creams, etc, that you can purchase at drugstores but the most potent formulations are in the form of acid peels with various strengths up to 70 percent that can be performed in a dermatologist’s office or at home. Those with sensitive skin should probably avoid glycolic, lactic, citric and malic acid peels or use lower strengths. Make sure to follow ALL instructions for what to do before and after the acid peel to prevent harming your skin.
3. Hyaluronic Acid
This is sometimes shown on labels as sodium hyaluronate or hyaluronan and is a chemical that occurs naturally in the deeper layers of the skin. It acts as a humectant by drawing water to the skin to moisturize and plump the skin temporarily which is why it is one of the best anti-aging ingredients.
While Botox is one of the most popular injectables to soften wrinkles and fine lines, Restylane (most popular) and Juvederm (less popular than Restylane) are common injectibles that are also used and are made with hyaluronic acid.
As we age, the body produces less of this acid so you can use skincare products that contain this ingredient or utilize the popular injectable Restylane.
Antioxidants that are great for fighting wrinkles, fine lines, uneven skin tone and other signs of aging include topical vitamin A, C and E, green tea, ferulic acid, idebenone, coenzyme Q10, beta-carotene, alpha lipoic acid, panthenol, etc.
Free radicals from pollution, foods, allergens, UV rays, etc, break down the cells in the body leading to premature aging and increasing skin cancer risk. Antioxidants fight off free radicals and help prevent wrinkles ad fine lines.
Of all these antioxidants, vitamin C is the Big Kahuna although the other ingredients such as coenzyme Q10, green tea idebenone (top ingredient in Elizabeth Arden Prevage), etc, are also popular and effective.
You can buy anti aging products with the previous four ingredients and use them effectively but if you do not add sunscreen, you will just be wasting your time (and money). Nothing is more skin damaging leading to premature aging as well as increasing the risk of skin cancer than the sun.
Wearing sunscreen at all times except when the stars are out will help to prevent wrinkles, uneven skin, brown spots and other forms of hyperpigmentation as well as premature aging.
Sunscreens containing physical blocks such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as well as avobenzone and oxybenzone which are chemical blocks are best. Reapply as necessary. Every two hours at least if recommended if you are out in the sun.
Caution When Using Products with These Ingredients
- If you have sensitive skin, retinoids and AHAs should be avoided or used carefully and infrequently because they may be even more irritating leading to burns for those with sensitive skin. Hyaluronic acid containing products are best for sensitive skin.
- Retinoids may be deactivated by AHAs so alternate usage between these products. Use retinoids at night and AHAs in the morning or use them on alternate days.
- To effectively fight free radicals, use antioxidant containing products morning and night. Do remember that if you use certain antioxidants such as vitamin C in the morning, you must follow with sunscreen because of the photosensitivity of vitamin C. Applying vitamin C containing products without sunscreen will render vitamin C ineffective.
- When applying the products, do apply them also on the neck right down to the collarbone as well as your hands which also show signs of aging. Retinoids which can be irritating on the facial skin should not be applied to the thin skin on the neck.
Other ingredients may produce some great results in the fight against wrinkles and fine lines and aging besides the five discussed above include peptides, algae peptides, copper peptides, neuropeptides, oxygen activators, etc.
